SELF-PUBLISHING SOLUTIONS:

Online Resources

These days, just about anything you want to know about self-publishing, book preparation, production and printing is just a click away. Dragonwick Publishing has listed some useful information for the self-publisher and links to the appropriate websites.

Copyright Law

Protection is granted automatically in Australia from the moment of creating a work. There are no formalities to be completed and publication is not necessary for copyright to subsist in the work. Generally, names, titles and slogans are not protected by copyright. Unless the work is your original creation, it is likely that someone else will own the copyright. If this is the case, you should ensure that you have the copyright owner’s permission to make copies of the work.

International Standard Book Numbers (ISBN) and Barcodes

If you intend to distribute your book through commercial booksellers, you will require an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) – which ensures that your book can be identified throughout the world. Dragonwick will organise this for you at no charge. Barcodes are used by some libraries and bookstores to monitor stock. If you require one, Dragonwick can obtain this for you at $45.00.

Cataloguing-in-Publication Data (CiP)

This is a free service provided by the National Library of Australia. It involves the preparation of a cataloguing entry for a book before it is published. This CiP entry, which is derived from information supplied to the CiP Unit by publishers, appears on the imprint page of the book. Dragonwick will apply for this entry on your behalf, if required, once an ISBN has been allocated.

Legal Deposit

Legal deposit is a statutory provision which obliges authors with an ISBN to deposit copies of their publications in libraries in the country in which they are published. Under the Copyright Act 1968 a copy of any work published in Australia must be deposited with the National Library of Australia and the appropriate state libraries. This is the sole responsibility of the author and copies should be sent as soon as the books are received. A second or subsequent edition does not have to be deposited unless it contains a new ISBN, additions or alterations to the title, text or illustrations.

Google Books Partner Program

This is a free service that enables authors to promote their books on the Internet. Google scans the full text of participating authors' titles so that online users can see books that match the topics they are searching on. When a user clicks on a book search result, they're taken to a Google-hosted web page displaying a scanned image of the relevant page from the book.

You can promote your book at no charge on Google and expand your reach to targeted customers. By matching the content in your books with user searches, Google Book Search connects your books with the users who are most interested in buying them. Users are able to preview a limited number of pages to determine whether they have found what they are looking for.

If your book has an ISBN, you can join the program by sending a printed copy of your book to Google or uploading it in PDF format. Dragonwick can supply you with the appropriate files to upload (CD or email) for $20.00.

Lending Rights

Public Lending Right (PLR) is an Australian Government cultural program administered by the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts. PLR makes payments to eligible Australian creators and publishers on the basis that income is lost from the availability of their books in public lending libraries. This scheme is complemented by the Educational Lending Right (ELR) scheme for books held in educational libraries, such as schools, TAFE and university libraries.

Each entry includes a description of the work’s contents, full bibliographic details, author, editor, illustrator and subject index. It provides a spacious venue for events such as book launches, readings, literary evenings and lectures as well as meeting spaces for writers' groups and literary organisations.
