SELF-PUBLISHING SOLUTIONS: Book Preparation & Production Dragonwick Publishing will guide you through the book preparation and production process from concept to print. Book Design, Size and Finish If you have a definite idea of how you would like your self-published book to look, please supply a mock-up or detailed instructions. Most people, however, prefer to leave this to the designer. Your book can be produced in a range of sizes, e.g. A5 (148 mm wide x 210 mm deep), B5 (176 mm wide x 250 mm deep) or A4 (210 mm wide x 297 mm deep) and may be saddle-stitched (24–56 pages) or perfect bound (60–600 pages). Custom sizes are also available. The majority of books are printed black only, on 80 gsm paper stock, for the text section. Full colour, glazed covers are printed on 250 gsm one-sided artboard. You need an eye-catching book cover that will invite people to pick it up. Whoever said you can’t judge a book by its cover was wrong! It is well known that when choosing a book, buyers look at the front cover, the spine, read the blurb on the back, then maybe flick through the inside pages. The cover artwork should relate to the book’s subject in some way. Otherwise, make sure it's totally neutral – solid colours, abstract patterns, etc. However, make sure the background isn't too distracting as it will take away from the impact of the title. You can incorporate your title and subtitle into the artwork as long as they remain legible. Make sure you resist the temptation to use artwork from the Internet or books without copyright permission. Typically, the back cover is where a potential buyer spends the most amount of time looking, before making a decision to buy your book or not. Even then, they only look for about ten seconds. The text could consist of a description of what the book is about; a list of advantages the reader will get from reading your book; endorsements from well-known people in the field of your book and/or some details about the author. The text should inform and make the potential purchaser want to buy your book. There is flat rate of $300.00 to prepare the book (including covers) plus $5.00 for each mono text section page. Colour pages can also be inserted in the text section (individual quote required). Approximate Number of Pages As a general rule, you can allow approximately 300 (A5), 450 (B5) and 600 (A4) words per page (depending on type style and size used), but you must also include the front matter, chapter headings, illustrations, index, etc. An accurate page count – in multiples of four (A5) or two (B5/A4) – usually cannot be determined until the layout is complete. Manuscript Presentation The text must be TYPED in a legible manner. It can be supplied by email or on CD/floppy disk (MS Word preferred). Printed (hard) copy can be used but scanning to a usable format will incur an extra charge of $2.50 for each page. Handwritten copy cannot be accepted. Illustrations and Photographs Good quality original photographs and illustrations, supplied by the client, can be incorporated into the design at $10.00 each. Major photographic retouching may incur an extra charge. Clients’ scans can be inserted but must be supplied as enhanced TIFFs at 300 dpi. Copy-editing The manuscript is checked for consistency, punctuation and spelling. Normal revisions are included but work requiring major copy-editing usually incurs a charge of $10.00 for each 1000 words. Indexing Comprehensive computer-generated indexing is available for non-fiction books at $15.00 for each 1000 indexable words. Genealogical Data Family trees, charts and some research can also be catered for. Consultation required. Proofing Your manuscript and cover will be set up in page form, including any photographs or graphics you have requested, and sent to you for checking. If you find errors or wish to make minor author’s corrections, return the proof with the alterations clearly marked. Alternations due to major changes by the client to the text and illustrations, at this stage, may be charged at $50.00 per hour. Bonus Sales Flyers Fifty (50) black and white one-sided A4 sales flyers and a full-colour email flyer (PDF) are included at no charge with the original order. Extra sales flyers are available at $15.00 per 100. ISBN, CiP and Barcodes International Standard Book Numbers (ISBN) and National Library Cataloguing-in Publication Data (CiP) are supplied at no charge. Barcodes incur a cost of $45.00. Non-Profit Organisations A ten per cent (10%) discount is available to non-profit organisations on the total production cost (only). Members of the Northern Rivers Writers’ Centre and FAW NSW are also eligible for this discount.
